Red Grano onion seeds come from the horticultural researches of Texas Agricultural Experiment Station of Texas A&M University. In their search for a high yielding, sweet onion that produced an early crop, they selected a variety from Spain and continued to improve it over a period of several years. In 1944, Texas A&M University released the first variety of Grano onion, which led to variations such as Red Grano.
